Is Morocco safe for women to travel alone?

Is Morocco safe? In short, in my experience, Morocco is a safe country to travel in – even for women travelling alone – as safe that is, as any other country!

Of course, if you go off the beaten track and camp out alone, follow men into the back of their shops by yourself and drink ‘tea’ with them – you are taking a risk that would be a concern anywhere in the world.

If you wander around in skimpy clothes, singlets and shorts – you are in as much danger as you would be in any other Muslim country where local the women are well covered and the men are not exposed to such temptations (not to mention it is very disrespectful of their culture).

If you keep your wits about you and keep it sensible you will be fine!

I travelled to Morocco for 3 months on my own – some of the time with a driver and other times alone staying in Riads (traditional Moroccan accommodation) and Airbnb’s.

Each day I wandered through the Medina’s, along the beaches, chatted with artists and shop owners, was told I was beautiful 100 times a day, caught public buses and trains and I felt very safe.

I didn’t … accept invitations for tea in the backroom, walk through the quiet back streets of the Medina at night alone, I took the compliments and moved on and I sat in carriages with others in the train.

Moroccan men are very happy to give you a compliment, they aren’t ‘blokey’, they are generally kind and respectful – but of course there are always exceptions to be careful of .. the one who wants a relationship or affair with a western woman; or the one who gets angry because you didn’t buy his products – but he will only throw his hands up and tell you off.

Morocco is a Muslim country in the northern tip of Africa- and while Islam is their religion- they are in no way supportive of the extremists or terrorist activities in other Muslim countries. A large percentage of Moroccans are nomadic Berber (indigenous Moroccans), a very warm and gracious race.

Having said all that, my time on tour in Morocco was much more enjoyable for me – I enjoy being in the company of others, sharing the adventure and crazy hustle and bustle as you wander bravely through the maze of Médina lanes and alleys!!
